You’ll have to be quite fit to keep up with retired registered nurse Valerie Riley, a vivacious sixty-something with a marvelous lifestyle that includes regular three-mile-plus jaunts around the local outdoor track, a weekly stretch and tone class, daily exercise at home and line dancing. If keeping up with her busy fitness calendar doesn’t make you too tired, you can follow her through a few of her other activities.

Valerie volunteers to help feed and clothe the poor, serves her church as a lector, Eucharistic minister and choir member, and—her latest addition—volunteers at Englewood Hospital. All this and babysitting for her three granddaughters too!

One can only imagine her frustration when osteoarthritis in both hips afflicted her so badly even tying her shoes was an ordeal. A person who loved walking for up to ten miles at a time, Valerie was almost in denial. “People were so worried about me. I didn’t even realize how bad things had become, the limping, the pain. But, I only agreed to the surgery after a much-anticipated trip to northern Italy and Switzerland made me realize the extent of my limitations.”

Two total hip replacements at Englewood Hospital with muscle-sparing, minimally invasive surgery, small scars and short hospitalizations resulted in a speedy return to an independent, active life. Seven weeks after her second hip was replaced, Valerie began her new routine at the track with the goal of building up to five miles at a time. “I am terrific,” she offers. “I have never felt better.” After recoveries she describes as “phenomenal,” the upbeat Valerie is back to the full life she missed for far too long.
